The most MS-Office compatible Office package

WPS-Office is supposed to be most compatible with MS-Office.
This is important if you need to transport files between MS-Office and your Linux Office package.

WPS does support PPT, DOC, DOCX, XLS And XLSX so it should be able to directly create and read files for/from Excel, Powerpoint and Word etc.

In a pragmatic world that is important.

In an Ideal world everybody should boikot any Office package that does not support open standards. And WPS does not seem to do that as Libreoffice does.

I have also imported rather complex Excel spreadsheets into Calc without any problems - so Libreoffice is pretty compatible too.

But whether you are pragmatic or idealist; there is an Office package under Linux for you.
I will give WPS a spin and report back.....

I'd really like to hear about that... Excel especially. I am trying to find an acceptable Office replacement for my accountant father who doesn't want to make the upgrade from O2003.

The file for Windows is called office_free_2013.exe

Yeah that's because I am a Linux guy I should have linked to the main page. One big point with this is that those Microsoft formats will be available to Linux users.

You don't happen to know if it requires Java (or any other interpreter) do ya?

I didn't check I just had a look at it in Windows 7 and it looks and feels just like excel word and powerpoint.
It has a shity license thoug. You can only use one copy on a personal computer. If you use it in an organisation or on several computers you have to pay licenses etc etc.

Checking Linux version tomorrow...

I just did a quick install on XP/SP2 and it did not dump Java on there without asking (as I was afraid it might). It also did not ask for an update to SP3 or an upgraded version of the MS Installer Pack. I had some numbers to add to my "ammunition testing" spreadsheet so I tried it out and it went fine (only minor calculations, no macros, no external links). I didn't like the fact that it automatically opened "online templates" at the end of the install without asking. I also didn't like the fact that it is 184M but frankly when compared to MSOffice 2010/365 that is like the size of a floppy. :-)

Ohhhh, it is the xml file format that you buy. Well, at least it seems that way. For an extra ten bucks you can have actual MS Office 365 and all the great stuff that includes (like cloud storage and the warm feeling of having given Microsoft more money).

Yeah well IMO Microsoft should pay you for giving up your data to them (the cloud) Office 365 data is put on US servers and as we know the US nosy guys will know what breakfast sausages you eat Furthermore it is only a matter of time before Microsoft will use your data to sell you - like Google does.

Regarding that spreadsheet of yours - I am pretty sure that it will work just fine in Libreoffice too...(?)
