Apparently the Gnome devs have started listening to their users. As of Gnome 3.2 there will be a choice, not "forced" suspend when you close your laptop lid.
Personally I am actually using suspend but I can change it anytime in the gnome-tweak-tools already. So I guess the news is that they have started listening.

I want to have the menu bar at the bottom - give me back this functionality that you had in Gnome2 and removed in Gnome3!
Even if I set it in dconf-editor it does not work.

Hear, hear!!! Gnome 3 is totally thumbs down for me for lots of reasons!
