It is based on Kernel 2.6.34, Gcc 4.5, Gnome 2.30 and KDE SC 4.4.4. And support for 11.0 is now history

OpenSuse 11.3 is Out |
| I upgraded an install of 11.2 by changing the repos to 11.3 (simply by replacing every "11.2") and run a zypper dup. It toke a good two hours. It seems fast enough so I went for the news. So what is new? I dunno
OK the full suite of server software must be the new thing here, but I already had set one up via the LAMP repo. Lets install Opera 10.6 then. I searched for it in the package manager and found it and picked it, and clicked on "use". Started Opera and the fonts looked like crap. This is surprising because that is a real traditional strong point of Opera. In Firefox the fonts were beautiful and crisp. Hm must have a look at that. In the preferences of FF I could pick Sans-serif and Arial and the whole enchilada - in Opera, only a very limited set of fonts was made available. Not so in Mandriva! Oh well Firefox is preferred I guess. Navigating is fast and booting too, even in Virtualbox - that is always good. KDE is well integrated and so is Gnome. Suse never has been bad and it is quite user friendly, if you can figure out how to handle repositories. I think that has been a jungle lately so lets see if it has become any better... | I go to "Get it" on the Open Suse site and search for "gtk-recordmydesktop". It finds it nicely and shows in what repo I can find it. But since Suse has this nice one click install I go for that little wizard. I get the download dialog asking me if I want to save, or what program I want to open the YMP file with. Que!?? But I had nice info on the repo from the "Get it" site so I decided to add it. I copied the address and entered it in the prompts for adding repos by providing the address. I was asked to import the key and that was it. Not bad Suse. So I installed the gtk-recordmydesktop via the menu/control panel and it all went as expected. I like that - that is always good. So what do I think of Opensuse 11.3 ? Well it is Suse. If you liked it before you will not be disappointed now. I kind of semi like it - it just is not as good as Mandriva - in my eyes - and yes, that is only a matter of taste. It is a good and solid distro. I also have to add that my view on Novell might rub off on Opensuse. As Long as Microsoft has the outspoken strategy of crushing Linux, and Novell pays extortion money to them, I will be paranoid about Microsoft technologies in Linux that can be used against Linux at a later point in time. Like mono, to implement Net technologies. Suse is the instrument that MS will use for that. I also am very skeptical on Novell helping Microsoft in the Supercomputer segment, where Linux is dominating and Microsoft is a novice, not wanted by anybody. I just do not get why Novell is helping someone that has an open policy of killing Linux, unless they are prepared to sacrifice Linux. But that is politics and business. Opensuse 11.3 is a good distro. Will I be using it now? No! Will you |
