Windows 8 is launched

Microsoft has launched Windows 8. The preliminary reactions seem to be that it is good for Tablets and not so good for traditional PC/Laptop. It is hard t say what market Microsoft is aiming at.
If it is the tablet market they are truly brave - some might even say stupid.
If the plan is to continue the world domination with a product that works worse than the exisiting solutions - then they are overly optimistic.
The big thing seems to be that it is supposed to be "One OS to rule them all". It could work but the feeling sneaks in that people are not going to settle for the second or third best on any platform for the sake of compatibility.
Microsoft is not going to beat Apple on Tablets - not Samsung either.
Windows 8 is not going t beat Windows 7 on Laptop and PC's - and never Linux either, but the present Desktop statistics makes this a highly subjective statement.
And Microsoft can completly forget about Mobile phones - That market is already covered by Apple an the Android phones Like Samsung etc. It is most likely that the main income in this segment stll will come from "licensing" Android phones.
But MS will probably do what they can to block interopt sollutions - to promote the one golden card - One well communicating system on every hardware.
The tech press is going bananas over Windows 8 so the system is getting plenty of attention. When that calms down, the system just has to be good.....
Linux has never had a better opportunity to take over the PC desktop. Linux is probably not going to do it this time either - but the opprtunity never has been better
And in all fairness; we have to allow other OS'es a small niche too. As it is, Linux completly dominates the Mobile phone market with Android, all the supercomputers in the world run on Linux. Maybe we should let MS have their small space - they have to eat too....
