these devices use the ground or neutral wire as an extended antenna and they work quite well
the only drawbacks are that it places the network wiring in close proximity to a high voltage source and there can be a problem with electrical noise if the wiring is around a motor.
although i cant be positive without seeing the schematics and testing it on the bench with an o-scope
