The command line can be an intimidating and unforgiving environment. Unlike
working in graphical environments, it's not entirely clear what commands one must
execute in a terminal to accomplish a given task. Couple this with the fact that the
command line does not prevent you from doing things that might cause irreparable
damage to your system, and it becomes clear why many people never take the time
to learn how to use it.
Despite the hidden dangers and uncertainty faced by new users (known jokingly as
"newbies" in the technology industry), you shouldn't fear the command line.
Armed with the information in this book you will acquire the skills necessary to
become more proficient in the command line environment. You will discover that
most Unix, Linux, and BSD systems share the same core architecture, with only a
few subtle differences. After learning the basic architecture and commands of Unix,
Linux, and BSD systems you will easily be able to transition between the different
platforms.

Command Line is useful depending on what experience level as an user are you.

For me? I have no intentions to learn and to be honest, do not really care much for it.

All I want from my system is to use the GUI and be useful.

Not trying to be a snob about it, just that I have no desire to get to that level.

Perhaps one of these days, I might sit and start learning because I have a necessity.

First of all you are definitely no snob. The snobism in the Linux world mainly comes from the hard core CLI fans. :ugeek:

I think it is important to state for the newbie that you in fact do not need to be able to use the Command Line Interface (CLI).
If you use a distro like Mandriva there is a control panel that will take care of the settings - no problem.
You just install it and start using it. It does not have to be harder than that.

You can however improve the speed and tweak your installation and fix errors via CLI. So when you get curious you CAN use it (but you don't have to).

I think this is a perception that frightens many people from trying Linux. They are afraid that they must write cryptic code in a terminal. And that is not necessary.

Totally agree. All I want from my systems is to be easy to admin via GUI. Is more intuitive. Pictures and Icons tells more than Commands.

I have sit before with Unix System V before. Gee... all the switches and commands that have to be remember. Even with that, I manage to get on the top 5 of my class. Just that is easier to right click and choose Unmount on an Icon that type the Unmount and tell which drive.

That is what I am getting.

I consider myself an experienced user rather than an expert.

What I see, the OS for the 21th Century it should be all GUI for the user end and CLI if you want to.

Now, with cloud computing coming hard at us. The GUI will be king.
Embedded Systems does not have the pain of hardware issues.
99% of those issues were resolved at the Manufacturing Level.
Therefore, the user does not need to tweak the system to make it work.

Mandriva is great with the MCC and that is perhaps its crown jewel.

Yes the Mandiva Control Center is a good one. Making it perfect for beginners and experts - there is no conflict there.

I'm a snob. It's why I prefer distros like Arch and FreeBSD...

I like knowing what's going on under the hood. One of the real powers of Linux vs. Windows.
