I disable SELinux right after an install.

Yeah, I don't know why it wasn't disabled this time. I normally do too. Guess I forgot this time 'round. :\

Man, literally every single kernel upgrade, Fedora f*s something up with nvidia. Can't get in AGAIN - same symptoms as when I just had to reinstall. kmod fails on boot. Completely, so no X (but there is in a way) - have to Ctrl+Alt+F2, and try to sort it out. Thought I had sorted it out some THREE TIMES. It keeps saying the driver isn't there, when it is. I've been through nvidia-xconfig, been through xorg.conf so many times tonight I literally can't see any more.

Eh well, guess I'll try again tomorrow. Time for sleep now.

Glad I run more than one distro. Also am still glad I'm no longer on the colorado kool-aid I used to be on.

Dunno but in Arch I had to manualy unload the old Nvidia module after the upgrade gave me this message:

Code: Select all

( 7/15) oppgraderer
libdrm                         [######################] 100%
( 8/15) oppgraderer nvidia-utils                   [######################] 100%
( 9/15) oppgraderer nvidia                         [######################] 100%
ERROR: Module nvidia is in use
In order to use the new nvidia module, exit Xserver and unload it manually.
So I went to /etc/inittab and commented id:5:initdefault: and uncommented id:3:initdefault: and rebooted.
I had to do this because it cannot be replaced while module nvidia is in use.
After that:
I did a

Code: Select all

sudo rmmod nvidia
and reboted.
and pacman -Q nvidia confirmed that I had the latest version going.

Could it be something similar in Fedora? That nvidia does not install the newest driver if the old module is running?

No. It says that the nvidia module plain isn't there on boot. Nothing in use. I *may* have found something, not sure. Was finally able to get in btw to an different kernel, but not without a cost:

Code: Select all

bfc7d000-bfc9f000 rw-p 00000000 00:00 0          [stack]
/etc/rc.d/init.d/functions: line 530:   823 Aborted                 "$@"
   [FAILED]

Hello, b.s.

Code: Select all

$ uname -r
2.6.33.6-147.fc13.i686

I wish this damn thing would QUIT INSTALLING THE PAE KERNEL on updates. I HATE THAT THING, and it never works.

I have no clue what any of this means.

http://www.tutorialspoint.com/unix/case ... tement.htm

Oh well I guess.

At any rate, I'm going to try something on next boot, in tty:

Code: Select all

su
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old1
nvidia-config-display disable
nvidia-config-display enable

Let's hope it works. I found it on the Fedora forum.

Nope, didn't work. :(

No more time to fool with this now. I need to get over to my daughter's to watch my grandson.

Have a good day, if I can't get online over there (not sure if I can or not ATM).

As far as trying to startx and having issues saying already something there. From the terminal that your logged in as root, type init 3, then type init 5, this should kill all x sessions then restart them. then you can go back to whichever tty has xwindows on it.

Does look a bit like the post above imho. :D

So, do I edit whatever I need to while in init 3 or in init 5, or does it matter? Am bad with this stuff. Please forgive ignorance here. xorg.conf will need to be edited.
