I have a fully functioning Arch installation and I have installed compiz. I wonder how do I get my animated desktop cubes in Gnome. Lemme know
(3d works fine in KDE).

Got CCSM installed? Got gtk-window-decorator installed? Got all the plugins installed? Got fusion-icon installed? Tried Cntrl+Alt+left mouse click?

CCSM - I did not have that one. It is now installed thanks. That provided me with the menu for setting the compiz up. I did that and started fusion-icon. And it all works. Great! I love you you!

Got to figure out how to fix the windows tho.. They are impossible to move and keep sticking to the upper left corner...
And that was easy to: I just had to mark all the options in the window section of the Compiz config. No problem, Nice!
I then put fusion-icon on the autostart list in System->preferences->autostart.....
And Compiz starts on boot.
All is good and I am happy as a peach

It really is not advisable to have compiz start on boot. Since you have fusion-icon going, boot without compiz going, then turn it on with fusion-icon once your desktop is loaded. Then, if you go for a reboot or anything, turn it off again.

That is exactly what I do. I just automated it (As described in the Arch Wiki)

But do you do the second part, turn it off before you go for a logout or reboot?

No I just put it in the autostart menu.

If you shut down with it on, it will be there still with your next boot.

Shut it down with fusion-icon before you logout or reboot; that's recommended by many, many.

Why?

When people have login or video issues, what's the first question they're asked?

If they have desktop effects turned on. I've seen it happen way too many times.

Then, when they check to see if they do, it turns out that they're booting and loading into the desktop with it turned on. When they turn it off so that it doesn't get booted with desktop effects already turned on, surprise, Gomer, their video issues go away. Computers aren't meant to have compiz, etc. turned on as they boot and login. It's hard on the video, and causes video issues. That's what fusion-icon is for, turning compiz on and off as necessary.

Arch may be stable, but it still has these types of issues. Don't be surprised if sometime you land with video issues from having compiz on by default. It happens in particular when trying to load into KDE - blank black screens, system freezes, etc.
