Panels in Gnome 3.x?

When Gnome 3 was released, I was able to modify the panels (among other things), thanks to viking's tips. I'm trying what is supposed to work in Gnome 3 on Mint, that being Alt+right-click to add things to the panels and to place them in another spot, etc.
I'm unable to do it with Alt+right click (it's not working). What do I do to add things to the panel, to move the panels, etc.?
Thanks.

Install Cinnamon; you will not be able to handle the Gnome3 panels like that.
Then you can log out and pick Cinnamon when you log in or you can do a ALT+F2 and write cinnamon --replace.
There you can place the panels with the cinnamon control panel. You can also drag fvourites from the menu to the panels and edit the menu by right-clicking.

It's not coming up in the repos.

Ah, wait, it finally came up.
Much better. How do I get Cinnamon added to my login screen? Right now I don't have option to switch desktops. Thanks.

On the Login screen you will have the Cinnamon option beneath the Userid and password prompt.

Sorry, not seeing it there (Linux Mint default install)?

Hmm

As you know I am not a Mint user so I was only assuming. It is like that in Arch!
You are left with F2 +
cinnamon --replace then...
Or just start it from ~/.xinitrc
by activating this line:
Code: Select all
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session-cinnamon

Hey, that's right. Had forgotten about using ~/.xinitrc. Thanks.

Oh, btw, I found this today purely by accident. It's in a bit different (and tucked away) place. Next to each user name (and it's hard to notice), there is a very small wheel that one clicks. There, are the desktops you can log into on Mint. Thank you, btw. I'm sure I wouldn't have found that even by accident if you hadn't mentioned this.
I had forgotten about Mate (even though
I myself posted about it). It's another one that will do what I want it to do. So, now, we have the choice of two desktops that will give us Gnome 2 style.

Mate actually isn't bad, btw, and to be entirely honest, neither is Gnome 3 (with gnome-shell) on Mint. It's just that there's a couple of things I like to do with Gnome that it doesn't have.

No mate is not to bad. But there is an annoying delay on that menu. Cinnamon lets you drag icons from the menu to the panel and the right-click alacarte editing of the menu is back. The delay first time you use the menu is even worse there though. I use mate as a standard.
I guess you could mark this as SOLVED now?

Yes, except I would like to know what happened to alt+right-click. Did they dump it from Gnome3, or ?

It is the same - but it only works in fallback mode.
So it is not dropped it just never worked in the Gnome3-shell.
