Need a how-to?

I don't need to speed up boot time on the netbook - it's plenty fast. What I need to figure out, is why it's taking the desktop itself such a long time to load. I've checked startup - didn't see much that would bog it down, but it is bogged big time. Linux Mint 12, Gnome 3 (gnome-shell), gdm. From the time I put in my password, I'm waiting over a minute before the desktop's loaded in, maybe two or close to it. It's getting annoying. Is there something I can do "under the hood" to see what's loading as the desktop loads?

Thanks.

I think E4rat would help for that too, because you can preload the most common autostart programs:

Doesn't matter. It's all going down the toilet anyway - couldn't download CentOS in the end, but I'll have a high-speed connection to get it with tomorrow.
