Mongodb

Postby dedanna1029 » 02 Jul 2011, 04:34

I ran a search at google to find out what mongodb is. Nothing just giving a plain definition came up in the search. This link did come up, but that still doesn't tell me in definition form what it is.

What is it? What is it for? Is it necessary to have? If so, what for? Anyone know? It comes up frequently in Arch updates, is why I ask.

Thanks.

Mongo (from "huMONGOus") is a schema-free document-oriented database. It features dynamic profileable queries, full indexing, replication and fail-over support, efficient storage of large binary data objects, and auto-sharding.

This package provides the mongo shell, import/export tools, and other client utilities.

"dynamic profileable queries, replication (of what?), and auto-sharding." - no comprende these 3 things. Thanks.

I think I'm getting a very very basic idea though. It's beginning to sound a big like a sql db. Y/N?

A sql db specifically for documents?

No it is not limited for documents. It is just a database. Diaspora depends on it. But I have no experience with it so there is no use interrogating me about it.

Okay, then that may be what it is. It loads on boot for me is why I'm asking all this, and didn't know what in the world it was for, or if it was something I really needed. I had installed diaspora at one time, then uninstalled it. Maybe that's it. I'll try uninstalling mongodb and see if anything depends on it that I can't do without. Thanks.

Edit: Yep, I still had diaspora-git installed (thought I'd uninstalled it?), and once it was uninstalled, mongodb uninstalled just fine. Very cool.

Yes I thought you had mentioned Disapora here at some point. Great that it worked out for you! :B
