Help us fire up a LUG

Greetings! Long time no see, huh?

We in eastern New Mexico have made another stab at communitizing the community with community tools. To that end, we offer a humble website and forum.

We would be deeply honored if some of you good folks would be kind enough to drop by and say, "Hi!" And maybe mention something about open source technology. :)

The homepage is at http://portaleslinux.org.

And please let us know how we can improve our lot, including pointing out stuff that is missing or broken.

Thanks all!

Mark

Hey It has been a while!
I will check it out and see If a humble contribution is possible. After all you have been contributing here and we need all good forces for a noble cause like that!
(That is; if you accept articles from exotic foreigners).
But one tip from here first:
Simple Machines Forum is not totally free even if it is Open source. So it could be a point made by real open source hardcore advocates (like Richard Stallman).
http://www.simplemachines.org/about/smf/license.php
There is the BSD License, the one Apple used to close its source later on. And then there is a pragmatic SMF license.
Where the unfree part is mainly in point d:
Any Distribution of this Package, whether as a Modified Package or not, requires express written consent from Simple Machines.

And I particularly find this bit in contradiction to open source:
Simple Machines reserves the right to change the terms of this Agreement at any time, although those changes are not retroactive to past releases. Changes to this document will be announced via email using the Simple Machines email notification list. Failure to receive notification of a change does not make those changes invalid. A current copy of this Agreement can be found on the Simple Machines Website.

Maybe you should consider PHPbb with an Open Source site (I can help you out with the switch if needed)?
There is no way to guarantee that that software will remain open.
I helped develop Invision powerboard (all free Norwegian versions are translated by me). After all the world had translated it, Matt something closed the source and made a business out of it. He is a liar! He had repeatedly stated that IPB would stay free. So it happens.

An open source site that does not have GPL is.... exotic :-D

PS:
I can see that it is not finished: There is no link to the http://bjoernvold.com/forum new section yet
PS2:
I have tested SMF and I found it quite functional and good. So it is good forum software. It is just less open.

+1

I get it via index.php - sometimes when index page comes in a flavor other than .html, it doesn't default.
