Toke a trip to Germany + free beer

Postby viking60 » 17 May 2012, 13:39

I am in Germany right now; and naturally the first thing I asked for was the hotels internet connection data (well eh the second thing... I asked for Beer first and I made it perfectly clear that it should be free since I use Linux).
So they asked me if i wanted the connection for one hour or for the entire day - boy what a question; no one uses internet only for one hour :snooty: .

So I get this note with
ESSID =Apfelstrudel
Username=1234orsomething
Password= something_like+0?=)(

Since NM does not work on this lap I wondered what encryption they had and if I needed to sett up wpa_suplicant for it etc etc.
As you can imagine it is useless to ask the hotel staff that so I just asked "how do you usually do it?"
Then I get a lot of IE talk and cut them of right there; "Does the hotspot work in Firefiox to?". And yes it does so I let them ramble on about their IE and translate it to Firefox in my head.
Basically this is really simple:
!Just search for networks in the neighborhood and connect to the one given to you.
Then go to Firefox and the hotspot login page with username and password prompt will be there.
Fill inn the given username and password and you are good to go.

I do not have a working NM so I had to use wifi-select and that found the hotel network so I selected it!
And that was it! Now I could log in in Firefox and start my surfing.
Not bad eh I can even get online in Germany now - boy am I international :-D
Regarding that free Beer I have negotiaded with the hotel Friz that has the most expertise in these matters that I should get either free internet access or beer if I write down for him what he should tell the next Linux guy....
A'int I bad :mrgreen:

Forget that noise! I'd take the beer and run! The last thing I want on any vacation is to go online! That's what I'm vacationing from!

Well I guess I am going fast but the Autobahn is not what it was. I found a free speed area though and checked that my car does 200 km an hour (or 120 mph).
It is a great feeling to thunder past a police car ignoring the instinct to hit the brakes - since it actually is allowed.
And I need the internet access to give you these highly dramatic and interesting reports +1
