Or do they honestly get inundated or have they just gone through too much in life?
If one is to be immune, the theory is that it keeps taking more and more to keep one satisfied with any one thing, thereby building up one's immunity.
But what if we're not talking about drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or anything of the like?
Just had an "I don't care" moment that reminds me of this question.

I guess you can - If you let it happen. But it is no fun - so you should avoid it. This kind of "inflation" reduces the values of things. Often it is a result of people not being able to cherish what they have.
