Upgrade to Win 10

Postby dedanna1029 » 19 Jan 2016, 01:38

There seems to be a lot of rhetoric on both sides about upgrading to Win 10. I'm just reporting here that my Windows partition got upgraded to Windows 10 today just for shits and giggles. It did not do anything to secure boot, which I had off, and it left the Mageia bootloader in place. It dual boots just fine, after several times of going into Mageia and Windows, secure boot is still off.

The upgrade to Windows 8.2 from 8.1 had hosed everything on my Windows box anyway, I'd have to redo everything on it anyway, so thought this was a good time to give Windows 10 a shot. I'm going to play with it a bit when I can again (a friend is borrowing the computer, and is liking Linux more than Windows lol - this same friend is Windows tech savvy enough to turn off the privacy violations as well), and report back on the general operation on it.

There are times I guess when it's good to bust through the paranoia machine and see what's real and what isn't.

Yeah I guess. The only thing that bothers me is that all those people persecute me simply because I am paranoid... :-D

With Windows 10 Microsoft is going to the clouds and they won't be coming back so Windows will be in the clouds to stay. This means that you have to trust Microsoft - and the government that instructs Microsoft - to treat your data well.

More and more data that used to be on your computer will be on Microsoft servers and you do not control them. That may be convenient and Microsoft will sure explain the great advantages of it.

But increased security is not one of them (call me paranoid :-D ).

Microsoft has explained to me that they are really good guys that never would treat my data wrongly and that they are very fair and trustworthy - yet I have this irrational feeling of losing control....

I do too TBH; however, this same friend who is using my computer right now can roll me back if I demand it lol. I still haven't had chance to play with it but will tonight my time.

Yeah, so far I'm not all that impressed, and I had it offline, no cloud. With cloud, meh. I'll choose my own, thanks.
At least they got rid of that damn "start menu", but then they put it on the start menu lol. All this crap that was on the first page of the start menu is now in the start menu in the bottom left. Click a picture when you can't really tell what you're clicking, crowding it all up. Well, at least I still have the Classic Shell start menu.
Another thing is that big ol' wide search bar taking up half yer task bar space. Since when did it belong there and not on the desktop itself?
I opted out of Cortana btw.
Ssooo, even though my friend says it's more like Win 7, it's not to me. There's too much in Win 10 that one has to just accept, and have no way to change. The default desktop is just butt ugly; I did some hunting around to change it, and even after I dressed it up, mah. Still stupid.
Roll me back to 7 Pro, thanks. Screw 8.1 even.
I hear tell they're going to stop supporting earlier versions of Windows very soon rather than their usual EOL dates they have stated to force people to 10.
I'll just give Windows the usual middle finger and go full Linu, ;)

I gave Windows a chance, it won't get another.

I can understand that.

The problem with Windows 10 is not how it looks (Better that 8x for sure) but what has happened under the hood.

You see there is this great big conspiracy to gather everything on a great big US server - to rule them all  Who is leading the Microsoft and the NSA these days; Sauroman and Sauron ?

I upgraded my late dad's laptop from MS 8 to 10. Is much more useable and easier to find settings on it. I did it for the simple fact to learn the new MS 10 and to have some new. Usually I use MS for few things but not for every day usage, that is what I want Linux for. I have another laptop running on MS 7 and hardly boot on that OS.

Will see how MS 10 does but sure hate the Cloud crap that try to force you to do.
