Nokia once controlled over 50 % of the mobile phone market in the world. Then the iPhone came in 2007 and since then Nokia has lost 90% of their market.
At the time Nokia was busy being the biggest company in the world so they did not have the time to compete with Apple - Google did it for them.
Nokia then got what many thought was the kiss of death from Microsoft and went "all in" with Windows software on their mobile phones.
The lousy results continued and Nokia had to sell their head quarter and lease it back and 10000 people had to go.
It is this slimmed down version of Nokia that now seems to have been able to stop the free fall.

The expectations for the quarter where a negative -6 % and as it looks they will achieve 0 % or maybe even a positive 2 %.
This is due to the sales of Nokia Lumia of 4,4 million pieces in the 4th quarter of 2012 compared to 2,9 million in the 3rd Quarter.
This is truly surprising but Microsofts heavy marketing of Win 8 might have helped the sales. This leaves Nokia with a market share of 4 %.
So they are probably not even on the top three list in the mobile phone market. That pretty much means that Windows 8 is not on the top three list either.
Samsung and Apple have increased their market share by 35 and 17 % in the same period so Nokia still is a dwarf in this market these days.
It would probably help Nokia a lot if they would offer Android phones.
But Microsoft will probably never accept that, and cut of the slim lifeline that Nokia has at the moment. The Nokia people have made some inquiries and every time a rumor surfaces, they are very eager to deny it
On the other hand Microsofts Windows 8 on mobile phones will crash and burn without Nokia so they will probably support/embrace them for some more time.
