Facebook is actively tracking all people by placing cookies; including those who do not have an account.
If you visit a page with a Facebook "Like" button then Facebook places cookies on your computer - and there are 13 Million sites with that button:

The researchers now claim that Facebook tracks computers of users without their consent, whether they are logged in to Facebook or not, and even if they are not registered users of the site or explicitly opt out in Europe. Facebook tracks users in order to target advertising.

That is pretty much as if someone joins you in the toilet; even if you want to be alone there....

This is a breach of European law - but as we have learned; the Europeans are foreigners so they do not count. Others may count but Facebook tracks all of them.

What a lovely world we live in. They can intrude on your life and sell information you did not consent to giving to, without even getting any service in return. Shouldn't this be entirely against US neoliberal free-market values? They are stealing our intellectual property.

At the very least this reminds me why I don't trust Facebook and will not return, regardless of the struggles and inconviences it causes when organizations you are involved in use it for networking.

Yes, just loverly. So loverly in fact that we worry for what we'll leave behind when we leave this world. We'll be happy as larks because we'll finally be away from this kind of crap, but because people didn't stand up to the bullsh!t when they could, before we all got too deep in, our kids, grandkids, their kids, and on and on will have to put up with much, much worse.

Social media is bad these days. Really bad, and Zuckerberg in particular is pulling off a lot of stuff on top of this here. I could start at least four new threads on what's happening. Unbelievable. "Orwellian" doesn't begin to describe him.
