Contributors to Gnome

Postby viking60 » 31 Jul 2010, 14:14

You will notice that only 30% is developed by professionals. The biggest contributor here is Red hat with 16% Novell is second with 10% .

Canonical has 1% and is beaten by companies like Intel, Fluendo +++.

This has been criticized by Redhat amongst others (Novell/mono).
It is a healthy sign for Linux and Open source that the biggest contributor also makes the biggest profit. And it adds to the MS confusion about open source being communism that never can be business - when it in fact is a profitable business.

This raises some questions:
Is this another round of envy towards the Ubuntu success? Are contributions only measured in the code that is provided, or do we need another standard?

Mark Shuttelworth's view on this and other things: here
This is how Gnome is developed:

To follow up: I think Adam Williamson from Fedora (ex Mandriva) has some good points here:

Oh yeah, saw that he was off on the tangent again.

It sure makes Ubuntu look like a parasite. I was suprised by the figures he presents.

Well, IMHO, Adam's good at making anyone look like a parasite. LOL.

He is making good points and I like his style.

Very true, and me too.
