Fixing the Iron (Chromium) browser!

Postby viking60 » 20 Oct 2010, 08:31

Well I love Iron because it is the Chrome browser without the spying. It is a very good browser so I was a bit disapointed every time I started it all my previous settings were lost. And I got the message:
Startup error your preferences cannot be read grr :f So I figured it must be a owner problem or a chmod problem, but where to start? After some research I found the files in ~/.config/chromium/Default/
In this directory you have to
as root:

Code: Select all

chown <your user> Preferences

This was owned by root and that is plain wrong.
Furthermore go to:
~/.config/chromium and do a:

Code: Select all

chown <your user> "Local State"

After that your Iron will work perfectly, and exactly like Chrome without the negative spying stuff
Mandriva users can find Iron here http://mib.pianetalinux.org/mib/forum/v ... ron#p13035
Arch has it in the repos.

Well, I will say it's a lot more lightning fast than any of the browsers I have.

Yep! Implemented those changes btw, before it got to the point to where it wouldn't work.

How to add bookmarks? I found where to manage them, but not where to add them?

Edit: Never mind. Found it - the star to the right of the location field.

Thanks.

:cheers

Edit: I think I'm going to go ahead and make it my default browser.

Everything just works but one thing - there is a bug filed by someone on it, but I lost the link (sorry), that being that one can't upload files. Iron crashes the second one chooses the file to upload. Are you getting this? I switch to FF now to upload files, but it would be nice if they got this fixed - I really hate FF (and Seamonkey) any more.

How is the browser as far Web Sites Compatibility?
That was one of the reasons I started using FF instead of Mozilla after the renamed to Seamonkey.

I hate to go on a site and does not let me displayed because is not in the "Shopping List" of browsers

It's perfectly fine. :) It's a whole lot better than the frikking FF, where you get that animated gif crap all over the place.

I do have a message about Iron in /var/log/errors.log. I'm wondering if it's something that needs fixing, and if so, how? I have been getting periodic ssl messages in Iron when I go to some sites, but can't tell if it's on the site's end, or mine, because when I reload the page, and try to re-login again, things go fine:

Code: Select all

Dec 14 20:04:46 dedanna kernel: iron (2139): /proc/2155/oom_adj is deprecated, please use /proc/2155/oom_score_adj instead.

Thanks.
