As an alternative to Gnome3 Canonicals Unity stands out, so I thought I would have a look:

As you can see I have no clue how to use it. The workspace selection is a disaster and I just cannot find any advantages here. It is horrible. The favorite bar keeps disappearing and I cannot drag programs to the workspaces. It must be that some of the functions do not work in VB or something. It is hard to believe someone has made this on purpose. Do feel free to show me the errors of my ways here.
The "windows key" will toggle the modes and give the search mode and it is ok. But IMHO this is light years away from Gnome3. Please feel free to show me the errors of my ways. I don't think I will test this much more.
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

Yeah I just thought I'd try it. That is nothing for a beginner. But you can use good old Gnome of course.
