ose vdi guest install dd: /dev/sda no such device

Postby rolf » 30 Jul 2012, 00:15

Trying to install Xandros from the eee-pc dvd or various iso images.

I created a new machine, tried with dynamic default 8G virtual disk and fixed disk, results are the same:

The dvd or iso will boot but stops with:

error: could not find the disk size! can not create user partition
dd: /dev/sda no such device

It appears the Xandros installation is by a dd copy of the image to the first disk but cannot identify the vdi file as sda. :confused

I thought the many-years-old dvd for my eee-pc 701 4g had got corrupted but fresh isos behave the same way.

http://sourceforge.net/project/download ... 080719.iso

These are the two fresh isos I tried, the second linked from some howto that is dated but similar to what I did: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11039

Hm sounds strange - that should be possible. I will test it as soon as I can access my superduperboxes tomorrow and let you know. I belive the HD was detected and written to by my puppy clone saluki.

I have also been able to chroot and partiton with the new Arch install regime.....

I've gotten further. Thinking about the age of Xandros and seeing the vbi is created as AHCI SATA by default, looking at Hard disk controllers: IDE, SATA (AHCI), SCSI, SAS in the manual, I removed the AHCI SATA attachment, attached the vbi to the IDE controller.

The original dvd still craps out, so maybe it is corrupt. However, with a fresh iso, the installer is happy, completes to a 'reboot' prompt, but that comes up black screen. There was a slowly blinking cursor, upper left, at first, but that disappears in the time I was waiting for something to change. :wall:

Perhaps, a different iso.
Thanks. :greetings

It was more complicated and more simple than I could imagine. :o

It seems my installations were successful (except the original 4g, which might be corrupted). That old how-to was more useful than I thought, and I posted the rest of the story, there: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11039

For one thing, it's getting easier to just crank out a new virtual machine.
