Microsoft will offer MS Office for Android and iOS. There are no plans to offer it for traditional Linux. This will keep the existing Libreoffice and OpenOffice developments going.
Libreoffice and OpenOffice are available for Windows too so they have the advantage of being available on any sensible platform.
What really is hard to understand is why anyone would need an Office package on a smartphone? They are not famous for their brilliant keyboards and not all that famous for their big monitors either.
So where is the productivity in starting to write letters with your thumbs? It looks like a marketing thing where MS has done it, simply because they can.
As a default this will be only a reader where you can read MS Office documents (won't pdf do?) on your phone but you need to register with Microsoft and you will then be able to buy editing capabilities if you buy the Office 365 subscription.
It looks like a useless product, but it is getting attention and that is useful in itself..

Re: MS Office coming for Android and iOS
Is a marketing strategy with the best and most popular product MS has. If works on Droids IOS they can pitch it bundle with W8 instead of a "viewer" crippled ass application for the other OSs.
Blackberry is the Enterprise phone system and is dying due to piss poor management. MS wants that piece of pie too. So they can keep controlling the Enterprise even at mobile level.
