Browser: Luakit

Postby viking60 » 14 Jan 2013, 11:58

ImageWell I have used Chromium for some time now with all the anti spy stuff activated, but lately when playing Angry birds it started lagging - big time. True this is not the fastest of boxes, but I thought I should try it in some other Browsers too.
And the fastest without any comparison was.... Luakit!?

Yes there is nothing fancy about it and you will have to get used to some exotic ways of browsing - but it is fast - real fast. And it works. So even if you prefere the good old ways of browsing - this browser could do well in your toolbox.

The first thing that puzzles you after installation is where to actually start the browsing :-D But just take it easy and have a look at the bottom of the browser - that is where most things happen.
Learn these three letters from the alphabet and you are good to go:
o (open)
w (new window)
t (new tab)

So to start browsing type o and google.com or whatever and this flash will jump there immediately!
To keep your current page and open a new tab for google you simply replace the o with a t.

Code: Select all

t google.com

or w to open it in a completely new window. Luakit offers mouse free browsing - and once you get the hang of it you wonder why not everybody does it like that :confused

You do not have to worry about placing your cursor anywhere - just type o and bjoernvold.com anywhere - it will pop up faster than ever +1
Flash works out of the box here and you can simply start to use it.

The next thing you wonder about is how you go "back" and "forward" - there are no fancy toolbars and no arrows.
Answer: Simply right-click and go back as much as you like +1

If you like to alter it, you can clone it from Github and start working on it.

This browser is slowly creaping up to become my main browser - I never meant it to be. It just sneaks up on me and keeps growing on me - what can you do? :confused

This is quite a little charmer once you get past the first surprise. Install it and tell me what you think! It might not be your only browser but being so light it certainly does not harm to install it as an alternative.

I bet you will not be disappointed.

(PS I have found nothing that will work on Mandriva or Mageia - so I guess the best bet is to ask our italian MIB friends)
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

Bummer that there's nothing for Mageia or Mandriva. Installed Mageia, first thing that happened was it got a trojan in Firefox 10. This, of course, spread to FF 17 when I started using it from the tar.gz, so FF is uninstalled for now, and I'm not using it.

I'm having a heckuva time finding a decent browser. I prefer Iron to Chrome/Chromium, but even it is getting boggy.

I'd like to give this a try, so may go file a package request at the Mageia bugzilla.
