Gnome3.6

Well the time had to come for a dreaded new Gnome release. And 3.6 is a big one with transition to systemd. So I had to boot my Arch in systemd which was no problem since I had done all the preparations.

And got a Gnome that was as slow as a turtle on Valium using close to 100% cpu - and it was the gnome-shell that was using it. Now there are bugreports all over the place to confirm this behavior. And since I had made the trasnsition to systemd the good old CTRL+BACK SPACE does not work anymore...
So there was a lot of rebooting.

All the extensions stoped working of course - because Gnome has become a core for external plugins/addons that are not supported. So they simply do not care about all the addons that provide the lost functionality.
If I go to the extension site I get the message that my Gnome is not up to date:


I discovered that adding my user to the video group did work wonders on the cpu load

But now it is almost usable again so I will be back with the exiting story....

And here is the story I have nothing to add really...
Gnome is going for Smartphones and Tablets, good luck with that!
It is getting worse on Desk and laptops and one could suspect that they are trying to copy the Windows 8 approach. An approach that will be a failure IMHO.

MS is nowhere near a place in the top two - how can Gnome expect to be even on the chart?

Gnome 3 has a wrong vision - I had hopes that they would correct their faulty ways after heavy criticism. But it looks like they are ignoring it and simply insist on making Gnome more and more unusable.
The only good thing about this is that our wallpaper changer still works so I have animated backgrounds...

And damn, my smartphone did eat two posts I'd made here (either that, or it was Opera Mini that did on the phone). Oh, the irony - that's what a smartphone desktop will do in the end. I'm not going to bother re-posting it; I'm way too tired (up most of the night). My basic opinion is over there in the Lounge. --->

I still stand on principle. I think I had it right about Gnome 3 in the first place, other than the fact that this is Canonical, which atm I hate equally as much.
