Foundation name : OpenMandriva

Hello to all,

Finally, the name of the foundation is now fixed : OpenMandriva.
That matches both :

- the result of the poll done
- and the wish of Mdv SA

Thus, the parentage remains clear for everyone.

Ok I guess, reminds me of OpenSuse. Remains to be seen what it is a name for....I do not believe for a moment that the entire community has been waiting for that decision and will now produce a flawless distro.
If they can get things going it will be a good thing, but that is a tough one, since there are almost nobody left over there

I think there are, necessarily gradual, developments going on. https://ml.mandriva.com/wws/arc/foundat ... 00102.html
The fact is that we're waiting for the legal status of the foundation (which will come soon) to have a legitimate team (ie choosen by the community for the community) that will take all decisions related to marketing, branding, naming, spreading etc. :)

In short, I could say, it's maybe unusual, but before working on our communication, branding, name etc we (the self-named transitions team) are working first on
- consolidating technical things (Migration, saving build system),
https://wiki.mandrivalinux.org/index.ph ... ild_System
- Preparing the webservices migration.
- Making cooker (the next community distribution) continue to be developed and improved.

This means, we're doing much more work under the hood than we are officially announcing :)

The communication is mainly for people following us (this mailing list, the blog, etc) there is still no big announces :)

If you want to ask more about the migration, and the really cool things it will bring, don't hesitate to come in #mandriva.org (freenode). People wanting to participate are welcome of course.(when I'm connected, my login is ashledombos, but almots anyone in the chan can answer you)

Naming, branding etc will come soon, but will be the matter and the responsibility of the foundation legitimate leaders. With the community strongly implied in decision process. (At least this is how i see community projects) But for now, there is still no foundation, so still no leaders... from our side it's better to concentrate on being alive, even still with no name than becoming a cadaver with cool (or not) name and logo, and let on its side Mandriva SA bring us a great foundation :)

After major X11 trouble things seem to be back on track again. I have both Gnome3 and KDE4 minimal working again.
I have been without a GUI for some time.
Virtualbox drivers are lacking so I had to go for VESA. Still no sound. And some X dependency complaints when installing drakconf - but ignoring them works now.
Dbus daemon has errors so Gnome turns it off.
Openbox works just fine.
My favorite - hsftp - seems unmaintained and just hangs. I use it to transfer files between my VB and my real box because the shared folders stuff is a real hassle. :f
Caramba Proyvind ! I am going to blame you for this (because I know your name :-D ) :T Here you have this unique piece of software that was originally created by Mandrake and you leave it behind!
The irony is that it works perfectly fine in ArchLinux....and older Mandriva versions like 2010. And it is way better than lftp if you ask me.

Still back on track, is good.....

Hey you, active in the Mandriva Norway Forum, I'm wondering why nothing is listed on the wiki's current events page? What has been defined, should be, no? Even if little? The forming of the name OpenMandriva, etc.?

It will all come in good time. I just believe in having a product first - before doing the bureaucracy. The other way arround is counter productive.
It is not even clear if this will be a Mandriva 2012 or 2013 at the moment....

There seems to be still some doubt about what the distro will be called:

Näh that looks like they have not decided for the Alpha name. Open Mandriva - Moondrake or something else - don't you think?

There has been a minor "pissing contest" between Schulz and POK about the distro name.

https://ml.mandriva.net/wws/arc/foundation/2012-10/

The Foundation is to be called OpenMandriva. (I don't understand what rationale there might be for having different names for the Foundation and the distro.)

Ah Yes I see! Well let us have the distro first - they may call it Apfelstrudel for all I care - and then we can start fighting.
It is kind of wasted energy to quarrel about the name of a baby that never is born...

But good Berserk names like Mjølnir (Thors Hammer) or Odin or Loke must be concidered of course +1
