[solved isabug] but discussion is still welcome, KDE4

Postby dedanna1029 » 12 Feb 2013, 22:00

I've asked this before, but it's become to the more-than-annoying point, and I'm getting downright ticked.

How the h#ll do I get the doggone terminal (albeit konsole, guake, ANY terminal) to quit defaulting to the ~/.Documents folder on load? I'm so sick and tired of having to cd every time I use terminals in KDE any more! They don't do this in Gnome or any other DM, WTF???

Thanks.

Hm strange... What is the output of

Code: Select all

cat /etc/default/useradd

If the path is wrong you could change it like this

Code: Select all

usermod  -d /path/to/new/home/dir dedanna

Add -m before -d if you want to move data from the current home to the new one.

This is why it ticks me off so much these days. KDE's done this on every machine I've installed it to, all down through history (from KDE1 on up), and it's doing it as well on others' machines, now; on one I'm currently working on here and there. There's no need for command #2 that you posted; it shouldn't be necessary:

Code: Select all

[root@dedanna ~]# cat /etc/default/useradd
# useradd defaults file
GROUP=100
--->HOME=/home
INACTIVE=-1
EXPIRE=
--->SHELL=/bin/bash
SKEL=/etc/skel

Hm the path looks OK.
Have you set something in bash? There must be some setting somewhere where you want Documents to be default?
I have never experienced that with a KDE install.

In konsole > Settings > Configure Profiles, you can edit the profile to choose the start point. :A

Well, in konsole, I did tell it for Initial Directory to be /home - it had defaulted to /home/myuser/Documents when I brought up the folder to have it start in. Did that just now. Also unticked the option below it (Start in same directory as current tab).

Will give it a go and see what happens. I'm hoping that will change things universally in KDE; guake is also doing this, so... we'll see what happens (being on the netbook, a drop-down terminal is really more convenient than having to bring up konsole all the time). I'll report back later.

viking, this is on a fresh full install of Mageia, as it's always happened before. No chance yet to mess with bash profiles or anything. More than anything, I just want to know why this happens with KDE.

Thanks.

I just made a "fresh" install of KDE in VB (I had Openbox and Gnome working there).
And in the Konsole I get the the traditional Home - not Documents. :confused That indicates that you must have some settings somewhere. :think:

Aye, and that's the setting I want to know. Is there a kde file, maybe, that I need to edit?
Again, this is only in KDE.

In Konsole, that fixed it, but all the others are still doing it.

Try other terminals, please? Thanks.`

Holy smoke! You are right! :shock:
When I start a Gnome-terminal in KDE then the default is actually ~/Documents (or Dokumenter in this case). You are hereby declared not guilty - (and I will apologize for thinking that you had been smoking your socks :-D )

That is not set by you it must be a bug +1

I will investigate further....

There is nothing in the Erata about it - cheking the Bugs.....
Nope I cannot find any reported bug either - so that leaves us only one option:

To wait for our Oracle - jkerr - to confirm this and then file a bug report :-D
:S Jim!!?
(While he takes 5 minutes to answer I will see if I can find a workaround.....Probably easily done in the guake or terminal settings.)
Edit:
Setting another path in the gnome-terminal settings is not possible and the xterm pops up with the correct home path - and since this also affects guake (as you state - I have not tested it) it is probably KDE (not Gnome) related - urxvt also pops with the correct path :confused

Makes me wonder what guake and gnome-terminal have in common... :think:
And this seems to be an inherited weakness since the behavior is exactly the same in Mandriva 2010 the Guake terminal pops up with Documents as default :confused Maybe it is a feature? :lol:
A feature that Arch does not have.....

I stopped using KDE4 a couple of years ago when they broke kdepim with all that akonadi stuff. I used Gnome2 for a while but have been unable to come to terms with Gnome 3. I now use XFCE, which provides everything I need. So you'll need to find another sacrificial victim to report this bug :)

Ah looks like the Oracle has been wise again then :-D
@Dedanna In guake it could help to alter the default interpreter from <user shell> to /bin/bash - have you tried that?

Aye, I have tried that.

This has been going on for literally years... konsole even does it for a while, then eventually something (what that is, I have no clue) comes along to stop it. In other terminals though, it never stops in KDE.

I'm going to check ~/.kde4 files, and see if there's anything in them that resets this, but it will have to come at a later time. It could also have to do with kdm itself? I have a lot to do; my time in this trip to Scotland is rapidly coming to a close, very unfortunately.

Edit: In fact, there are bugs out on this:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302903

google search, on "kde terminals defaults to ~/Documents"

So, it seems, if these dam distros would just upgrade KDE to at least 4.9.3, we'd have a fix for this?

Good lords, man, that will be forever... *sigh
I think it should be backported to previous versions...
