Something else is wrong then. We've got it installed to some three different laptops plus my netbook. One was used for Cauldron testing. Runs/ran fine.

Come to think of it, I also know someone personally with a laptop similar to yours running Mageia 3.

Fedora doesn't even do all that to systems and I've had hdds go out on installs of it.

You could ask what's up here or there either one, but I guarantee it ain't the distro Mageia. There's been zero reports of things like that happening. Sometimes, however, installing new distros brings out hardware issues that were already there.

In addition, there are not bug reports that I can find on a Dell D600, only this thread, which no one can make sense of, pre-MGA3 release.

I'm beginning to regret having upgraded to MGA3. No sound in KDE4 again, but I've had the issue before even with other distros. With 2 however, it worked fine on the netbook. Now, I have none again, and have forgotten how I fixed it.

I think everyone knows that no sound for me = a distro dumper, especially when even I can't figure out how to fix it.

Please don't even dream of mentioning Gnome 3 in this. I'll crawl all over you for it, and I got no time to set up OpenBox (don't want to, really). I want a desktop-independent desktop. Unfortunately, there's no such thing. Every damn prog on a Linux system is either KDE or Gnome. I'm sick of it.

Guess if you don't want progs that use graphical interface there is always text based... so 1970's!

XFCE is good. You can even use Compiz for that good old eye-candy. Desktop cubes etc. We cannot have a sound berserk without sound that's for sure :snooty:
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

At least the text-based runs a helluva lot better than graphical. Windows, anyone? Yeah, the GUI sure improved it, and is working on making those same "improvements" for Linux, in an effort to be Windows. I tend to appreciate functionality, even if others don't.

At any rate, I got 'er fixed. Don't remember now what it was, sorry. It was a week ago, and I've moved like lightning since, in what little time I get with the computer.

XFCE? For shame. It's missing a LOT of features still that I use.

Nah, give me a real desktop. One like, oh, say... Gnome 2.32.

Also, Woodguy, I'd appreciate it if you'd actually answer a question next time.

I'd be happy to answer a question had one been asked. There wasn't!

As for Windows and GUI.. windows is GUI. Before Windows there was MSDOS and I agree the performance was MUCH faster even with way less CPU, memory, disk space, etc. I think that is kind of a tricycle vs SUV comparison, though.

Glad you got the sound issue sorted!

Sorry if I ruffled any feathers, Bye.

Just because it doesn't have a question mark doesn't mean it isn't a question. If you'd spoken directly to the sound issue or directly about Mageia3, and maybe contributed something in that area, since that was the chief complaint (viking did this), it might have been welcome.

Mageia has solved the Openbox menu problem:
In Mageia 4 it will work "out of the box" because the xdg menu system will be made a dependency of Openbox.
So you can follow the openbox wiki until version 4 at which point the easiest way would be to delete your ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml before you update.
