The Apper version certainly did not help one way or the other:

--the GUI does start and there are 391 updates. Then Apper starts to simulate the upgrade - and it is still simulating....
It seems to be waiting for some services to start.
I'll be back with report....
..It has been 15 min now - and I strongly suspect that this thing has gone into an eternal loop.....
(or maybe I simply started it again ) I am not familiar with Apper
...
1 hour later it is still resolving dependencies...

Berserk style I broke it off and restarted it.
This time there were 40 packages - and oh wonder it did finish the update

Ok I am back in testing mode again thanks to lucas tip.
So far I have
Installed it (a LOT of times) and this part works like a charm.
Updating it was possible the first time but then something happened so urpmi got lost - to fix this I:

Added repos without updating afterwords.
installed Apper
started apper as normal user to update:

It finds a load of files - but it simply looped the first time

I broke off Apper and restarted it
This time the update went through.

Then I did a

urpmi --auto-update

And everything was back to normal.

So I was saying....

Openmandriva looks good... and I thought I should drag the terminal from the menu down to the panel.
That is no problem

One thing that is new to me is that when I do an

urpmi nano

..as the normal user then it will actually work and I will be prompted for my admin password (kind of a graphical sudo).

In older versions urpmi would simply not work in this case.

The one thing that I like most about Linux is the ability to have several desktops - so you do not have to work with layers and layers of open windows.
In OpenMandriva this is handled very elegantly:

It reminds me of early Gnome-shell days - back when I still liked Gnome.
And I simply love this one
I can drag the documents or windows from desktop to desktop and I get an instant overview.
So here it is easy to have one Social media desktop one work desktop and one development desktop+++

As you can see you can add desktops by simply clicking + and remove them by clicking -

This is user friendly and very practical.
I think I am going to honor this with a video...

I discovered a major bug regarding Valhallian locales.

it is not possible to install kde-l10n-nb via the Mandriva Control Centre (Drakconf). It can be installed with urpmi:

urpmi kde-l10n-nb

This drakconf behavior has been reported before (I think) but the less used Nynorsk kde-l10n-nn is pre-installed and written only by few.

So if they want to reach 90% of the Norwegians they need to pre-install kde-l10n-nb in addition to nn.


The bug

After having installed inxi

inxi --recommends

told me that I needed to install mesa-demos
after that try:

inxi -v7  -rz

It will show you anything you need including repos.

I did notice though that the inxi info text in drakconf lies about the version that actually gets installed.
The version that gets installed is inxi 1.7.24
not 1.8.5 as drakconf tries to tell you

This is no big deal:
Just do

inxi -U

as root
and do it twice to get the correct man page

You will then have inxi 1.9.16 which is the latest and the best.

Well I must admit that I am impressed.
All the bugs I have reported have been confirmed and fixed within 24h (mostly faster). this last inxi bug is now fixed too.

I must admit that I am beginning to like the distro too - the look and feel of it is great.
If this can be made reliable - it will be a great distro.
And i hope they deliver it with inxi pre-installed - that will make it a joy to support it.

That urpmi fubar thing is in progress - and that must be fixed for people to get out of the start blocks. I have fixed it with lucas tip (apper) so I can continue to enjoy it.

I have not found a bug for hours - unless that distorted first sound counts as a bug.

It is the good ol' Mandriva "Jungle sound" that simply does not play right here.
(When entering KDE; Gizmos piano lessons do play just fine )

I think I will set up openbox on this one now - but first I will add myself to the sudoers:

opens the sudoers file so I can edit myself in there -no problem.

it's a good way to help the distro and i'm doing the same.

The distorted first/last sound will be disabled in beta2, waiting for a fix.

I have a problem setting hp printer(net printer) with hplip.

Yes I have this tendency to stumble my way through the Linux world and telling everybody about my f..ups.
So I will be the one asking the stupid questions that nobody else dares too

And yes I have a Hp photosmart network printer connected to an Archbox - not this (virtual)box.

May I suggest openbox for your server? It gives more power to the serving and takes few resources:


It can live in perfect harmony next to KDE.


I had to give up 2010 a short while ago so I converted that box to a Manjaro box.Which holds the VB I am testing OM in.
