PCLOS a tiny first impression

Postby viking60 » 23 Apr 2010, 16:05

I always thougt this was a bad Mandriva copy so I have not paid much attention to it. But I decided to give it a spin in Virtualbox, and so far I am impressed!

Being a speed junky (everything that boots slow is thrown of my boxes, no mercy) I really liked PCLOS, it was fast. The Gnome desktop looks slick and it is all there.

But here I met the first bug: the "Configure your computer Administration center" will not start in my Virtualbox. This could be related to the "Hardware". And there is always the "Control center" with it's Suse look. :(

I installed a lamp server with phpmyadmin, and it all went like a charm no surprises - it all works. The synaptic package manager is fine by me, but I don't get the euforia many people have for it - it's fine, thats it.

PCLOS comes with a lot of codecs installed which many "purists" criticize , but for a fresh user who just want things to work - it's perfect.
You can start using it, an playing your music etc.
Once you have set it up like you want to you can "Make Live CD" and copy your setup to an image that can be a backup or an installation CD for further installations. It is easy to do via the menu (does Mandriva have that?).

I'll play around some more, in the meanwhile you can express your views on it?

I've not tried, and don't intend to, but I may try out Unity.

Ok I can understand that (it lacks 64-bit too). Unity seems a bit "unpolished" I am constantly repeating the upgrade in my VB and it all hangs at 96% :f
.........
FIxed it but wondering how a vanilla minimal install can eat up 8 gigs on my VB - is this thing bloated?

Could be. Still haven't tried it. I dunno. May blow it off.
