But the symbolism of keeping a promised date creates some hype and interest so that is OK. But the download will take more that 18 hours here.

Downloading it now..... I think. The mirrors are not very fast. On the German server you need to log in. I am not sure this is working

Re: Mageia
I started with aria2c from ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pu ... x86_64.iso (+ .md5) and it seemed to be using about 75-80% of my bandwidth, iow, ~ 100-120 kB/s. Then, I went to sleep and shut down w/o remembering about the download.
This a.m., I resumed with the -c option and we are quite a bit slower. Maybe it's the international demand for Mageia Alpha1!

Re: Mageia
When I began the download (at around midnight UTC) it was downloading at about 180kB/s. When I checked this morning it was still downloading - at about 40kB/s. In all, the download took about 10 hours. I assume that the problem is that they only have a handful of mirrors at present. I believe that they are hoping to make future iso's available by torrent.
For a first alpha it is looking very good. The installation went smoothly, Gnome launched without a problem and I had no problem adding sources but I haven't done much testing yet.

Re: Mageia
Yeah, like 15.2Kbps on distrib-coffee is a tad on the slow side.... *understatement of the year
Edit: I posted to their Facebook page, got a response:
Edit: I posted to their Facebook page, got a response:
Kim Garren Why are the downloads so slow? 15.2kbps on distrib-coffee is a tad excessively slow.
Kim Garren Says over a day to download.
Mageia If you want, you can try other mirrors: http://mageia.org/en/alpha << other mirrors on the page. Enjoy!
Kim Garren We have. They're all equally as slow. Also have tried with wget in terminal. Going at only 10kbps in it.
Mageia We hope to have new mirrors soon to avoid this kind of problem. Stay tuned! (But, it's better to see that a lot of people are downloading our ISO than the contrary. :-))

Re: Mageia
The post has been removed, probably because it was posted in error. That information was published (I don't remember where) about a month ago. A second alpha is due to be released within a week. It should see many of the deficiencies in the first Alpha resolved.

Interesting. I was getting it at the time I posted it, and they had *just* posted it on FB.

Re: Mageia
| I think it is time to reveal a small criticism regarding Mageias forum now (well this is page 5 so WTH): https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=134 It is rather sad that it fills so many pages and It has made me very reluctant to post there. The heated discussion is about the edit time where the site admin had set it to a couple of minutes. Now some members including our co viking jkerr voiced their protest in a polite and very constructive way - without the foul Berserk temper that occasionally can occur when you are a full blown Berserk. The site admin dug a trench and started shooting and not one single person did agree with him. Then he claimed to have a higher understanding of the members view - the so called silent majority. Wobo tried to explain to him that out of 7 opinions 6 were against him, and that he could not adapt the over 200 silent members to his view. (Some very famous leaders have "understood" the people without asking them before - but they will hardly win a popularity contest). | In principle this is interesting though. And I think House pointed it out very well. Is Mageia for the community and does Mageia trust its community? And who "owns" the post? You can copy and alter Mageia itself, to your liking - as long as you give others the same right- but you are not allowed to alter your own words or correct them, when you talk about it in a forum? Talk about closed source The short version - We don't like it because we always support fellow vikings! ![]() And BTW - you can edit your post here until Kingdom comes - it is your post after all. Now we have a scientific study that Berserks are more peaceful than Greek magicians (and probably less bored Peace man ![]() |
