:)

This is also my exact point with nautilus in Gnome 3, btw. I should be able to BROWSE my files, not make them look pretty in a window.

Well yes I don't understand why they have taken away the up arrow either. They just removed a good thing there.

Well, see, here's the rub. It's not *just* Gnome/Nautilus. It's also KDE/Dolphin/Konqueror these days, too. Confusing as all-hell to navigate.

I'm gonna be straight-up. I really am not liking the way Linux is heading.

*thanks the source that Fedora is staying put for now

rvause, where are you when I need you?

It's not working for Gnome3's root nautilus. It's ticked in gconf-editor and everything, I also ran the code.

It's just not doing it (although it is doing it for regular user).

Thanks.

Start dconf-editor:
<ALT>+<F2> and write in dconf-editor

Navigate to org->nautilus->preferences
and check always-use-location-entry

That got it, thanks. :)

Just used root terminal (which, thanks be to the source, is still there).

To make it easier and save some navigation in Gnome 3: To get the address bar in Nautilus you can just paste this code into a terminal and hit enter:

Code: Select all

gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences always-use-location-entry "true"
Manjaro 64bit on the main box -Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz and nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1. + Centos on the server - Arch on the laptop.

Now, is there a way to do this for Caja in Mate? It's exactly like the last Nautilus version before Gnome3. I've switched from Gnome, and gone Mate. All of the codes in this thread, all of the tweaks - none work. Thanks.

Mate is a Gnome fork so it is not surprising that not all commands apply.

The Mate Desktop Environment fork of GNOME2 was started by an Arch Linux user back in June, but it hasn't yet gained too much traction and is mostly just talked about on various forums around the web. It also hasn't been picked up by any distribution repositories at this point, but there is an AUR repository available for Arch Linux users.

I have deleted my mate so I have no way of testing it at the moment - I will re-install and have a look. But that probably belongs in another thread....
