Debian will switch from OO to LibreOffice

Postby viking60 » 26 Jun 2011, 01:52

ImageDebian is a rock solid and stable platform. And that means that it does not update all that often so they have been stuck with Open Office for quite some time now.
Now they are "proud" to announce that they will switch to Libre Office.
This probably means that they are not equally proud of running the current Open Office. Like most of the Open source world they were affected by Oracles attempts to close the source for "business".
The heavy weights in the Open source world with IBM and Apache in front got together and forked Libre Office. This fork turned out so well that it got better than Open Office, so Oracle gave up on their plans and released the OO code again.
Now Debian will follow. Open office will automatically be removed and upgraded with Libre Office.
So where does that leave Open Office? Pretty much as dead meat. LibreOffice has moved on, there is not much in OO that can improve it.

Yeah, and? Everyone's going to have to switch at some point.

No they don't have to. Open Office stays open and can be used - I just doubt that there is any point in it. Maybe a merger with LibreOffice if there should be one component that is better.

Well, I'm betting that OO won't be 'round much longer, so yeah, there wouldn't be any choice.
