Having a look....
Yes it is there. I have it working in my Mandriva box with 4.5.5 too. On my KDE 4.6 box I use Slim login manager so that was a natural suspect. But then dedanna confirmed that she uses it too and that she has the poweroff button working. :confused
That makes this a local fubar - and my complaint obsolete. I don't have to much trouble with shutting the system down in CLI so I can live with it. My criticism was that a newbie can't.
But I sure have no clue what I have fubared here.
Anyway 4.6 is the most stable version I have ever come across. When "dual booting" with Gnome the trouble was always to be expected on the KDE end -not so anymore.
I am starting to like it (the News and search plasma desktop).

Oh well. I don't know 'Slim'. Another, slightly more OT comment: I have made desktop icons in the kde3 desktop to execute a command, like 'halt -n' or 'shutdown -r now'. Maybe, there is some function to edit or create buttons, yet. Frankly, the development moves faster than I can spend the time to learn new stuff. I still don't like 'Folder view'. What's up with that? Plain ol' desktop is good enough for me.

I just tested Slim and liked it. Auto login worked so I kept it.
And there is nothing wrong with the good ol' plain desktop. I guess we are the ol' grumpy duo now :lam

As I understand, you are grouchily invoking a terminal in order to shut down or reboot. If so, maybe this

ArchLinux Wiki wrote:
Shutdown, reboot, suspend, exit, launch terminal from SLiM

You may shutdown, reboot, suspend, exit or even launch a terminal from the SLiM login screen. To do so, use the values in the username field, and the root password in the password field:

* To launch a terminal, enter console as the username (defaults to xterm which must be installed separately... edit /etc/slim.conf to change terminal preference)
* For shutdown, enter halt as the username
* For reboot, enter reboot as the username
* To exit to bash, enter exit as the username
* For suspend, enter suspend as the username (suspend is disabled by default, edit /etc/slim.conf as root to uncomment the suspend_cmd line and, if necessary modify the suspend command itself (e.g. change /usr/sbin/suspend to sudo /usr/sbin/pm-suspend))

will show a way to go a little easier on those grumpy old wrists. :cheers

Yeah I had forgotten about the halt. But sadly my old bones have to logout from the (non-working) power off button. That sends me to the login screen where I proudly can enter "halt" in the username field and provide a password -puh. :snooty: Sudo poweroff seems somewhat faster.

Yeah, you still have to log out in order to be able to shut down that way, in order to get to those options.

I gave him that already rolf. Also, Boss and I are on the same version, same distro. I've seen the MDV 4.5.5 systemsettings. Systemsettings has grown quite a bit since that version. And, I see you've now deleted your post. I'm going to leave this part here anyway.

Boss, I ran a search on several search engines several different ways on how to make KDE 4.6.1 specifically work with slim, and came up pretty much with nada. I haven't even found a bug report on it. I found other, kinda sorta at best related, but not really your issue with it.

Boss, another thought has just occurred to me. Is it possible that the same thing happened to you that happened to me here?

But then, you've done updates since then, so, I don't know. *shrug*

There is a selection to "Offer shutdown options" that might be related.

This is the post I was referring to, but my cache *may* have been not displaying the latest posts. I saw it, and then it was gone, so I thought you had deleted it.

Pssst Boss, Fedora 14, KDE 4.6.2-1:

(This is with GDM; if it works with it, it should work with Slim too)

I strongly advise you again to check out the settings in KDE Control Center if you're still having this issue.

Slim is the reason I think. Install slim in Fedora and tell me if it still works. We have been through the Control Center stuff. It makes no difference.
But this is no big thing, the CLI works fine.

Slim doesn't work in Fedora - there's a discussion out about that, but not being home right now I can't get the link. Will do when I get home.
